Project Title: INTELCEL : Investigating an intellectual history of Modern Celtic Europe: Philosophy, Language, the Arts, and Society (Ireland, Brittany, Scotland, England, Wales)

 

Applications are invited for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow co-funded by the Région de Bretagne Research Council and the Doctoral School of the University of Rennes 2. This post will be assigned to the Centre for Breton and Celtic Studies (Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique) at the University of Rennes 2 and the University of Brest. Within the general framework of the CRBC’s overall research strategy, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be required to work on a project entitled Investigating an intellectual history of Modern Celtic Europe: Philosophy, Language, the Arts, and Society (Ireland, Brittany, Scotland, England, Wales). An interest in Drama studies is desirable as it will allow the project to tie in with a previous postdoctoral project, but all applications will be considered equally.

 

Eligibility : Only candidates who have spent at least 12 months during the last three years in a country other than France are eligible to apply under the SAD regulations. (This will be counted from the date of the initial call for applications on May 23, 2016).

 

Academic requirements : The successful candidate should have a PhD in Celtic Studies (Irish Studies, Breton Studies, Scottish, Welsh); English; Literature, Theatre Studies; Art; Philosophy; Sociology; Linguistics or in a related field; an excellent publications record, strong writing and editing skills ; a proven ability to conduct independent research projects. The successful candidate should also have strong teamwork skills and should have some undergraduate or postgraduate teaching experience in their field of research which will allow them to contribute postgraduate seminars. Relevant language skills would be an advantage. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be expected to publish a substantial journal article as a result of this research on the intellectual history of Celtic Europe. S/he will work independently but will be expected to participate in the life of the department by contributing research seminars as part of the project. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will liaise with his/her mentor and with the directors of the research unit and will be expected to present progress reports at general meetings. S/he will also be expected to mentor doctoral students.

The Centre for Research on Breton and Celtic at the University of Rennes 2 (CRBC, EA 4451) is a pluridisciplinary team of researchers with a particular focus on:

  • Breton and Celtic linguistics, literatures, and oral traditions.
  • A multidisciplinary approach to Irish Studies.
  • Questions of identity and minorities viewed from a sociological perspective, combining theoretical, comparative, and regional approaches to the study of such issues both worldwide and within the contexts of Brittany and the Celtic countries.

The Center for Research on Breton and Celtic is composed of two research groups: the CRBC Brest, at the University of Western Brittany- Brest and the CRBC Rennes, at the University of Rennes 2.

The CRBC puts particular emphasis on the intellectual enrichment of international exchange and research collaboration.
